In a significant step towards bolstering its defense capabilities, Denmark has received four additional F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, bringing its total fleet to eight. The advanced aircraft landed at the Fighter Wing Skrydstrup facility after departing from the United States, marking a milestone in the country’s transition from its aging F-16 fleet to the cutting-edge fifth-generation fighters.
Training Takes a Leap Forward
Colonel Kim Jensen, commander of the Fighter Wing Skrydstrup base, emphasized the importance of the expanded fleet. “The arrival of more aircraft at Skrydstrup means that we can go from flying basic training to maintain the level we have learned in the US to now actually starting to train more people,” Jensen said.
The increased number of F-35s allows the Royal Danish Air Force to move beyond foundational training into more complex scenarios. “We can start training in larger scenarios and more specifically in relation to what we will actually need the F-35 for in the future,” Jensen added, signaling Denmark’s commitment to mastering the full potential of the state-of-the-art jets.
Modernization and Strategic Investment
The F-35s are replacing Denmark’s venerable F-16 fleet, which has been in service since the 1980s and is set to retire by 2027. This transition is part of Denmark’s broader defense modernization efforts, fueled by a significant increase in military spending. Earlier in 2023, Copenhagen announced a 143 billion kroner ($20.5 billion) defense budget boost over the next decade to meet evolving security demands and strengthen NATO commitments.

With eight F-35s now in its arsenal, Denmark expects three more to arrive in the coming months. These deliveries mark a crucial phase in the country’s efforts to enhance its aerial capabilities, ensuring readiness to address regional and global security challenges.
