Fincantieri Unveils Revolutionary Warship for Italian Navy Transformation
In a groundbreaking event attended by top defense and industry figures, Fincantieri has initiated the construction of the first FREMM EVO frigate for the Italian Navy. This pivotal moment comes on the heels of a significant contract signed in July 2024 by OCCAR and Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a collaboration between Fincantieri and Leonardo.
The FREMM EVO program marks a pivotal step in the Italian Navy’s quest to modernize its fleet with cutting-edge multi-role frigates. The initial vessel is slated for delivery in 2029, with its successor following closely in 2030.
These state-of-the-art warships will boast unparalleled technological advancements, including upgraded anti-drone systems and seamless integration of unmanned systems for operations in air, on the surface, and underwater. Representatives from Fincantieri affirmed, “The Italian Navy will have at its disposal two high-performance vessels equipped with the latest technology and innovative systems.”
Among the enhancements are a cyber-resilient Ship Management System, enhanced air-conditioning and energy systems, and eco-conscious platform improvements. The Combat System will showcase the cutting-edge SADOC 4 Combat Management System, fixed-face dual-band radars for ballistic missile defense, and improved electronic warfare, sonar, and missile systems.
Moreover, the frigates are meticulously designed with a robust maintenance strategy to ensure optimal operational availability and dependability. Giovanni Sorrentino, the CEO of Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, declared, “These new platforms epitomize the pinnacle of Italian naval engineering, combining performance, resilience, and sustainability.”
