Major Expansion Set to Double Production at Patria’s Hämeenlinna Facility by 2027
The landscape of European defense manufacturing is on the brink of a transformative shift as Patria, a leading force in armored vehicle production, announces an ambitious expansion of its Hämeenlinna facility. This bold move is set to nearly double the site’s production capacity, with the goal of achieving full operational readiness by 2027. Construction preparations are already in motion, signaling a significant leap forward in Patria’s operational capabilities.
Mikko Leino, Executive Vice President of Operations at Patria, sheds light on the strategic importance of this expansion. “Patria’s order stock has seen a remarkable rise, fueled by burgeoning demand for our armored vehicle projects,” Leino explains. “By expanding Hämeenlinna, we aim to accelerate the delivery of existing orders and gear up for new demands, including the production of advanced weapon systems and tracked vehicles.”
Leino emphasizes the broader implications of this investment, highlighting its role in fortifying the EU’s Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB). This expansion is not just about meeting current demand but also cementing Patria’s pivotal role in European defense collaborations for the foreseeable future.
The company’s prowess is underscored by its involvement in the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, where Patria has already secured orders for over 800 of its renowned Patria 6×6 vehicles. With over 200 of these powerhouses already delivered, the programme, a collaborative effort between Finland, Latvia, Sweden, and Germany, is capturing the interest of additional European nations eager to bolster their defense capabilities.
Patria’s innovation doesn’t stop at the 6×6. The company is actively advancing its AMV XP 8×8 vehicle projects, with ongoing developments in Slovakia and Japan. These ventures underscore Patria’s competitive edge in providing state-of-the-art armored mobility solutions on a global scale.
In addition to its Hämeenlinna site, Patria has expanded its production footprint with a facility in Valmiera, Latvia, which commenced operations in May 2024. This strategic move allows Patria to conduct early-phase vehicle deliveries internally while leveraging local industry capabilities for large-scale production in customer countries.
As Patria charges forward with its expansion plans, the company is poised to redefine the standards of armored vehicle manufacturing, reinforcing its status as a linchpin in the European defense sector.
