During his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Austin Ekeler was arguably one of the most versatile running backs in the league and a major part of the team’s offense, which was firing on all cylinders when he was healthy and had the football in his hands more often than not.
Unfortunately for Ekeler, the Chargers never showed him how much they valued what he did for them on the football field, even though he had some incredibly productive seasons, especially during the 2021 and 2022 seasons in Los Angeles.
Ekeler has been one of the most vocal players in the league in voicing his opinion about running backs in the NFL not getting paid what they deserve, considering how much teams lean on them as a focal point or substantial part of the offensive game plan.
After seven seasons with the Chargers, Ekeler decided enough was enough as he chose to leave the team in free agency, signing a two-year deal with the Washington Commanders for $11.4 million, which is still arguably a deal where he’ll be underpaid.
Ekeler expressed his frustration over this growing trend in the NFL on “All Facts No Brakes” with former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson.
“You can see how we’re a little p***** off,” Ekeler said.
“You can see how we’re a little pissed off.”

At this point in time, there’s no telling if things will change when it comes to star running backs like Ekeler getting paid what they feel they deserve, especially with the physical toll these players take at their position.
Only time will tell if things change and players like Ekeler get paid, but for now, he’ll try to prove his worth with the Commanders.
