The 2024 NFL season will be the first without Bill Belichick involved in decades, as the 6-time Super Bowl champion is no longer the head coach of the New England Patriots, and surprisingly did not land one of the many available coaching gigs available this offseason.
Recent reports indicate that there might be a reason why Belichick isn’t coaching this season that has nothing to do with him, and it has left Belichick confused.
There was a recent report that Patriots owner Robert Kraft spoke with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank this offseason and slandered Belichick by saying he was a lot to deal with, and WEEI’s Mike Kadlick shared on X that ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported “from Belichick’s point of view…he’s not exactly sure” why Kraft is trying to tarnish his legacy.
Seth Wickersham on why Robert Kraft is seemingly trying to tarnish Bill Belichick’s legacy (via Ken & Curtis on @WEEI):
“From Belichick’s point of view… he’s not exactly sure.”

Belichick was heavily rumored to be in line to accept the head coaching job with the Falcons before the team pivoted to Raheem Morris, and now we have an idea why that might have happened.
It’s a puzzling turn for fans as well, as there were plenty of rumors that Kraft and Belichick weren’t the best of friends throughout their time in New England, but to go so far as to tarnish the coach’s legacy on his way out the door after winning six Super Bowls feels extremely low.
It makes sense that Belichick would be confused, as this tactic doesn’t make sense.
Kraft gains nothing positive from slandering Belichick’s legacy other than keeping him off the sideline temporarily.
If Belichick wants to coach again, he will, and there’s no slander Kraft could come up with to prevent that from happening.
