The New England Patriots are going through uncharted territory as of late.
They could fall into a 1-6 hole on Sunday with a loss to the divisional-rival Buffalo Bills, and their quarterback situation seems anything but certain.
Mac Jones is expected to be under center again, but he’s been benched twice this season already, and he has yet to throw a single touchdown pass this month.
The Patriots don’t seem to trust Bailey Zappe to take the reins off him.
That’s why some fans and pundits have speculated about Louisville product Malik Cunningham, who’s working his way up the depth chart.
With that in mind, Dakota Randall of NESN.com asked offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien about Cunningham’s role going forward and whether Jones would continue to start (via NBC Sports Boston).

O’Brien reaffirmed Jones as the starter, adding that Cunningham’s role would be determined on a week-to-week basis.
Cunningham is a more mobile and athletic quarterback and he could give the Patriots an entirely different look from what they have right now.
He took over as QB2, with Zappe serving behind him and only ahead of fourth-stringer Will Grier, who wasn’t even active in the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
O’Brien admitted that they don’t know at this point in the week what Cunningham’s role would be next week against the Bills.
But with Jones reportedly set to be on a short leash for the remainder of the season, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them at least giving Cunningham a chance to play at some point.
