In 2022, the San Diego Padres made the National League Championship Series under manager Bob Melvin.
Front office, ownership, and fans were all behind the skipper after that successful year.
However, losing often makes things hard from a collective standpoint,.
After the Padres fell out of playoff contention and finished with an 82-80 record in 2023, it became clear that all parties wanted to move on.
The Padres accepted the San Francisco Giants’ request to interview Melvin, and Melvin quickly agreed to terms with the Giants.
It seems it was for the best for everyone involved.
What does the skipper himself think of his departure from the Padres to a direct rival?
“Bob Melvin: ‘All things considered, this opportunity came about … and this feels like the right one for me. I very much enjoyed my time in San Diego. It just seems like with a lot of things that were popping up there, it was time to move on,’” Padres insider AJ Cassavell tweeted, quoting Melvin.

He speaks about things “popping up” in San Diego, which suggests it was an environment in which he didn’t want to work anymore.
It’s perfectly valid: working relationships, just like personal ones, often erode.
It’s natural, and it’s part of life.
Also influencing his decision to leave was, potentially, a long-term contract with the Giants.
Job security at this stage of his career is important, and it’s hard to blame him for trying to secure a longer contract.
In any case, all parties seem happy, or at least content, with the outcome of the situation.
