The San Francisco Giants announced Bob Melvin as their new manager.
The Gabe Kapler era finished before the end of the 2023 season: now, it will be the Melvin era in the Bay Area.
The relationship between Melvin and his former team, the San Diego Padres, became a bit sour after the team failed to reach the postseason.
The Giants swooped in, requested permission to talk to him and it was granted.
From there, it was a matter of agreeing on the numbers to turn him into the new Giants skipper.
Asked about what type of culture he intends to bring to the Giants organization, Melvin didn’t hesitate in his answer to NBCS Giants.

“I expect to bring a winning culture (to the Giants clubhouse). As a new manager coming to a new team, it’s important to create respect right away,” he said before praising Logan Webb, the staff ace who said he was looking forward to working with Melvin.
Melvin was the longtime manager of the Oakland Athletics in the 2010s, from 2011 to 2021.
He managed to make the postseason a few times with low payrolls, although he has limited success in October outside of a couple of NL Championship Series appearances: one with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007, and one with the Padres last year.
Melvin hopes the Giants, with a few impact acquisitions in the offseason, can give him a good foundation to compete for a place in the playoffs and make a good run once there.
The Giants, in turn, are hoping Melvin can restore some of their lost glory after their 2010s dynasty.
