A few days ago, the Cleveland Browns made the decision to move on from Joe Flacco and sign free-agent Jameis Winston to be their top backup behind quarterback Deshaun Watson for the 2024 season.
On Sunday, multiple reports revealed that the Browns added another free-agent quarterback to their current roster in Tyler Huntley, who spent last season as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.
Some didn’t think much of the news, but others, like The Athletic’s Zac Jackson, questioned why Cleveland decided to sign both Huntley and Winston within the last few days.
Adding a second backup QB in a week (third total) makes you at least wonder about the injury timeline on the starter. No games until September but adding Tyler Huntley and Winston is just strange. Maybe it’s good business after last year, but it’s strange.

Jackson pointed out that the addition of Huntley should cause a little bit of concern about how well Watson is recovering from the shoulder injury that ended his 2023 season after just six games.
At the same time, Jackson notes Sunday’s signing might just be Cleveland making sure they have enough talented backup quarterbacks on their roster for next season after starting five different signal-callers during the 2023 campaign.
In Huntley, the Browns are adding a quarterback who has spent the last four seasons with the Ravens as a backup behind superstar Lamar Jackson.
Despite Jackson always being ahead of him on Baltimore’s depth chart, Huntley still had a number of opportunities to play during his four years with the team.
In the last three seasons, he started 10 games for the Ravens, including one in the playoffs.
So, at the very least, Cleveland now has another quarterback on their roster with a solid amount of starting experience.
Will this experience turn out to be needed by the Browns next season?
