After a better-than-expected 2022 NFL season, the Detroit Lions came into the 2023 campaign as one of the most hyped teams in the league, as many believed Jared Goff and company would make a big leap and make it to the NFL playoffs.
Although the hype created a lot of unneeded distractions for the Lions, Detroit was able to ignore all the noise and live up to, if not exceeded, expectations last season by making it to the NFC Championship Game.
Along with winning the NFC North division title and looking like the new team to beat in the division, Detroit came together offensively, with Goff looking like the real deal under center and the defense doing enough to keep the team competitive all season long.
Even though the Lions did exceed expectations last season and came one win shy of making the Super Bowl, the defense proved to be the team’s biggest weakness, even with star linebacker Aidan Hutchinson leading the way on that side of the football.
On Thursday, when the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft gets underway, the Lions will have the No. 29 overall pick where they might be able to get a potential game-changing player, with Lions legend Calvin Johnson Jr. believing the team should try to “beef up” the defense with that pick via the Up & Adams Show.
“My draft wish is to always beef up the defense,” Johnson said. “Just to beef up the defense as much as we can.”

Although there’s a ton of offensive talent in this draft class, especially at the wide receiver position, Johnson is right that Detroit should address its biggest weakness ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Only time will tell what the Lions end up doing, but it would be safe to assume they’ll take Johnson’s advice
