The Carolina Panthers have not had the season they were anticipating.
After selecting Bryce Young with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, the Panthers seemed focused on building around their rookie quarterback.
While Young was a talented prospect, the team’s on-field output has yielded a 1-10 record, forcing the front office to fire Frank Reich from his post as head coach.
The Panthers might have fired Reich, but when analyzing the situation, Cam Newton recently talked about how he should have never been their coach in the first place.
In a conversation on the 4th and 1 Show, Newton said, “He should have never got rid of Steve Wilks.”

Wilks was the Panthers’ interim coach during the 2022 season, a stopgap for the organization before they hired Reich.
Newton believes that Wilks was starting to build something with this team and that he had the respect of his players in the locker room.
He also pointed out that Wilks was a local who grew up in Charlotte.
Wilks seemed close to the organization, someone with a lot of passion for football and the players on the Panthers’ roster.
After the team ended his tenure, Wilks moved on to the San Francisco 49ers as their defensive coordinator.
The 49ers have continued their defensive dominance under Wilks, leaving fans and former players like Newton wondering why Wilks was let go in the first place.
It will be interesting to see how the Panthers move forward in 2024, and who they will choose as their head coach moving forward.
