The St. Louis Cardinals were incredibly disappointing in 2023, with a 71-91 record and a last-place finish in the NL Central.
It was much, much worse than what people have grown accustomed to when it comes to the Cardinals.
The pitching was the main problem this past campaign, but president of baseball operations John Mozeliak made three signings to bolster the rotation: Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and frontline starter Sonny Gray.
The Cards’ offseason obviously isn’t done yet, but it appears the bulk of their work has already been done.
When asked about his offense, Mozeliak was pretty straightforward and spoke from the truth, updating infield and outfield and even speaking on some trade candidates, via MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.
The @Cardinals will have a new look to their starting pitching this season, but what about the offense?

“It’s about trying to find at-bats for certain players. So when you look at our infield right now, you could imagine it’s going to be Goldy (Paul Goldschmidt), and then at second base, it’s going to be (Nolan) Gorman or (Brendan) Donovan, with (Masyn) Winn at short and (Nolan) Arenado at third,” he stated, before voicing that “we are pretty solid there.”
Then, he discussed his outfield.
“If we had to play tomorrow, it’d likely be Noot (Lars Nootbaar), Tommy Edman, and (Jordan) Walker. Our fourth outfielder would be Dylan Carlson. Obviously, we are going to go into camp and we are going to see what that looks like.”
The offensive group is looking solid on paper.
“Tyler O’Neill is somebody we are listening to on trades,” he also explained.
The Cardinals are likely to complete a trade for either Carlson or O’Neill, probably for prospects or bullpen help.
As an organization, the Cards are determined to return to contention in 2024.
