The St. Louis Cardinals made a major hire on Monday.
They are bringing in former Boston Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom, who was fired last year, as an advisor to the president of baseball operations.
That position is occupied by John Mozeliak in St. Louis, and who better than him to comment on what Bloom can contribute from an advisory role?
Cardinals insider Katie Woo tweeted some comments from Mozeliak.
“John Mozeliak on the hiring of Chaim Bloom to an advisory role: ‘It will be good to get an outside perspective of our organization from someone who is as well-respected as Chaim. Having a fresh set of eyes on all aspects of our baseball operations should be helpful,’” she tweeted.

The key word here is “fresh”.
Mozeliak has been doing this for a very long time, and it’s easy to overlook what he has accomplished.
He took over as the lead baseball guy in St. Louis in 2007, but had worked there in the scouting department since 1995.
He knows every corner, every secret, and every player in the organization.
He helped put together the foundation for the 2006 World Series title and had direct responsibility in the 2011 one, plus a myriad of division titles and playoff appearances.
He did that at a time when analytics weren’t as big as they are now.
That’s where Bloom can help the most with this Cardinals team: using analytics to help Mozeliak make the best possible decisions.
Mozeliak has the scouting eye of the old school, and Bloom provides an important understanding of analytics.
Both can be very useful in today’s game.
Kudos to the Cardinals for pairing the two.
