11 starts.
Three months.
That’s how much time elapsed between Adam Wainwright’s 198th win (which came on June 17) and his 200th, achieved on September 18.
The 42-year-old Wainwright just doesn’t have much left in the tank at this point, but the prospect of joining the 200-win club was too enticing not to try.
The efforts took a toll on Wainwright’s body and mind, as one could expect, so the Cardinals are shutting him down for the season.
“Adam Wainwright has thrown his final pitch in 2023, per Cardinals manager Oli Marmol. Wainwright threw 7 scoreless innings in his final start on September 18th, earning career win #200,” MLB on FOX tweeted.

With the prospect of enjoying some free time and even recording some music – he is a country music singer-songwriter – the brilliant right-hander is set to retire when the season ends.
He has enjoyed a phenomenal career, being part of a roster that won two World Series (2006 and 2011).
He has a 3.53 ERA and 28 complete games, not to mention a 1.24 WHIP and 2,202 strikeouts.
He will, in all likelihood, be a part of the Cardinals Hall of Fame eventually, having accumulated 200 wins and being so important for the team’s pitching success throughout his career.
Perhaps more importantly, he got to say goodbye to his loyal fans in the middle of a cool celebration for getting the 200 wins.
