Super Bowl LVIII is now about 48 hours away as of this writing, and both the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are making their final preparations before they take the field at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.
One key to the Chiefs’ unexpected success this season has been their ability to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and one reason they’ve been able to do so has been the play of left guard Joe Thuney.
Thuney has been dealing with a pectoral injury and wasn’t able to play in the AFC Championship Game, and the team has now ruled him out of Sunday’s big game.
Jerick McKinnon is questionable for Super Bowl LVIII.

Thuney made the Pro Bowl for the second straight season and got his first All-Pro First-Team nod this season.
Without him, Kansas City will have to work a little harder to keep San Francisco’s front four at bay.
San Francisco has defensive end Nick Bosa, who made the Pro Bowl this year for the fourth time in his five seasons and was last year’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Bosa had a bit of a down year after holding out of training camp while looking for a contract extension, but he still managed to end the regular season with 10.5 sacks, 35 quarterback hits, and 16 tackles for loss.
Arik Armstead and Chase Young also have to be accounted for, while defensive tackle Javon Hargrave had 7.0 sacks, 14 QB hits, and eight tackles for loss this season.
But as many have learned over the last couple of years, it’s foolish to bet against Mahomes.
