After the first few games on their schedule this year, it seemed like Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals were on their way to having a forgettable 2023 season.
However, the Bengals have climbed back from a 1-3 start, and they’re now sitting with a 5-3 record heading into a Week 10 matchup at home against a feisty Houston Texans team.
Burrow has been a big reason for Cincinnati’s turnaround this season, and some believe the veteran quarterback deserves to be in the thick of the current NFL MVP conversation.
FS1’s Chris Broussard recently shared on “First Things First” why Burrow is currently a legitimate league MVP candidate (via First Things First on Twitter).
“[Burrow is] really in this race. For one, there is no definitive leader [for MVP] right now… Look, if [the Bengals] keep getting better, his narrative is going to be the best one, so he’s definitely got a shot.”
Is Joe Burrow a legitimate MVP candidate?
“Absolutely. There is no definitive leader right now. I don’t disagree with Patrick Mahomes as the favorite. I’d give it to Jalen Hurts right now. … But Burrow has shot.” — @Chris_Broussard pic.twitter.com/SB3ZeQyId6

During the Bengals’ first four games of the season, Burrow only completed 57.6 percent of his passes, while averaging fewer than 190 passing yards per matchup.
He also threw two interceptions and only two touchdowns, and he had a miserable 69.1 passer rating.
But in Cincinnati’s last four contests, the Pro Bowl quarterback has seen his completion percentage increase to 75.8 percent, and he’s averaged over 280 passing yards per game.
Burrow has also thrown 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions, and all of this has resulted in an impressive 111.2 passer rating.
So, yes, based on his performances since Week 5, Burrow certainly deserves to be in the MVP conversation, especially since some of these performances have come against teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills.
Burrow and the Bengals will attempt to increase their current winning streak to five games on Sunday when they go up against the 4-4 Texans.
