The Chicago Bears own the No. 1 overall pick for the second time in two seasons, this time thanks to their trade out of the top pick a year ago with the Carolina Panthers.
Chicago decided not to draft a quarterback in 2023 and instead kept Justin Fields for another year, but it doesn’t appear as though history will repeat itself in 2024.
The Bears are projected to take USC signal-caller Caleb Williams with the No. 1 selection, something Colin Cowherd said Friday might not sit well with the young quarterback because of how bad Chicago has fared in the past 15 years.
“The Bears have had one winning season in 11 years. They haven’t won a playoff game in 14. They haven’t had an offense in the top 15 in the last decade. It is Loserville offensively, and their division looks really really good,” Cowherd said. “… I think Caleb Williams deep down privately has real concerns about the Bears.”

Success in the NFL is all about an individual player’s situation and landing spot, and that’s never more obvious than it is with rookie quarterbacks.
Just look at the dichotomy between Bryce Young on the Panthers and C.J. Stroud on the Houston Texans in 2023 – one is an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite while the other already looks like a bust.
Williams has no real say in the matter, though, unless he can force his way to another team like Eli Manning did with the New York Giants in 2004.
But if Williams really doesn’t want to go Chicago and the Bears aren’t interesting in swaying him, another team could move up to grab him.
