The Los Angeles Chargers have been connected to Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh all offseason and multiple reports indicate a deal could be done sooner rather than later.
But until we see pen to paper, the Chargers still need a head coach and will remain one of the hottest jobs on the market with quarterback Justin Herbert in tow and a couple of quality pieces on both offense and defense.
Any hire other than Harbaugh, though, would feel a bit weak compared to what the Michigan and former San Francisco 49ers coach would bring to Los Angeles, according to FOX Sports analyst Colin Cowherd.
“It really is, though, the only move for the Chargers [to hire Harbaugh],” Cowherd said. “… He’s a culture-builder – No more ‘Charger-ing.’ … Even hiring Mike Vrabel would feel small.”

Cowherd mentioned how the Chargers have “missed” on a lot hires recently, whereas Harbaugh could be a slam dunk.
He led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance quickly in his tenure in San Francisco and later brought Michigan to back-to-back College Football Playoffs over the past two seasons before he won the whole thing this year.
The Chargers have been the butt of a lot of jokes in the past, too, as the second fiddle to their stadium-mate Rams in Los Angeles.
Harbaugh could change the narrative around the team and elevate a franchise with a lot of potential between Herbert at quarterback, Derwin James at safety, and Nick Bosa on the defensive line.
Nothing is set in stone yet, though, which leaves a lot of uncertainties about where Harbaugh will land and who will coach the Chargers in 2024.
