Every single year, there’s a polarizing player ahead of the NFL Draft.
This edition is no exception to that rule, with the jury still being out on J.J. McCarthy.
Some believe he’s got star potential and would be a safe pick, even if he were to go in the top five.
Others, like Colin Cowherd, aren’t so sure.
Recently, he stated that he was concerned about McCarthy and his arm strength, adding that Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Michael Penix Jr. all had stronger arms than him (via The Volume).
“He’s actually the #3 player overall on my board”

McCarthy was considered to be a late first-round pick when the draft process started.
He was impressive in his Pro Day, and coach Jim Harbaugh called him the best quarterback in this class.
Scouts and analysts have fallen in love with his tape, but it’s not like there was a big sample size.
The Wolverines ran a run-heavy offense, and he wasn’t asked to do that much during his days in college.
Then again, he did show up in big moments and had some solid performances when his team needed someone to make a play, especially on third down.
That’s why it’s not so easy to make something out of a guy like him.
His situation wasn’t ideal for a quarterback to flourish and showcase his entire repertoire, and people don’t know if that’s because he wasn’t good enough to be the focal point of the offense or he was a victim of the offensive scheme.
We’ll just have to find out.
