Colin Cowherd has been singing Sam Darnold’s praises all offseason and believes he can be a great addition at quarterback for the Vikings and even lead them to a Wild Card berth after signing a one-year, $10 million deal.
That being said, Cowherd acknowledged on his show that Darnold isn’t set in stone as a short or long-term solution and that one rookie could take his job quickly.
Cowherd showed a mock draft on The Herd that had the Vikings trading up to the No. 5 pick with the Chargers to select Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a move that Cowherd said, “makes too much sense.”

Cowherd highlighted how the Vikings have picks 11 and 23, which is an ideal starting point in a discussion to move up to No. 5, where the Chargers and new head coach Jim Harbaugh have a lot of needs, but certainly don’t need a quarterback.
The Chargers have spent this offseason in the league’s worst salary cap situation, which has led to them cutting Mike Williams and trading Keenan Allen to the Bears, creating a massive void at wide receiver for quarterback Justin Herbert.
This mock draft has them trading down to 11 and selecting Georgia tight end prospect Brock Bowers, who would certainly make up for some of the production lost by jettisoning their two best receivers out of town.
If Darnold’s one-year deal was intended to form a bridge between him and a rookie QB, McCarthy would be a viable option to learn behind him for a year.
There are much worse situations for a rookie quarterback to fall into than having an offensive-minded head coach and the league’s best wide receiver.
