The Dallas Cowboys had everything going for them to make a deep postseason run this time.
Mike McCarthy’s team had one of the best wide receivers in the game, a solid defensive unit, and some playmakers on both sides of the field, and home-field advantage through the NFC Divisional Round.
That’s why it was so shocking to see them drop the ball against the Green Bay Packers at home in the Wild Card game and why so many people were surprised to see that they still decided to keep Mike McCarthy for the future.
That includes team legend Emmitt Smith.
Talking to Andrew Perloff, the Hall of Famer claimed that he couldn’t believe the team didn’t fire McCarthy, not for the final outcome but because of how ugly it looked.
“I thought that move would have been made because of how bad it looked,” Smith said.

He stated that he doesn’t see any sort of consistency from the organization, adding that it’s become evident that the coach didn’t get his players ready or motivated to perform when it mattered the most.
Notably, that has always been a talking point with McCarthy, who’s not known exactly for being much of a motivator.
Whatever the case, given his history of postseason shortcomings, it’s hard to make the fans or even the players believe that next season will be any different.
The Cowboys have a roster that’s good enough to compete at the highest level, and it’s been way too long since they last went the distance in a season.
Still, they might never get over the hump if they keep making the same mistakes over and over.
