Before the start of the 2023 NFL season, there was a lot of hype surrounding the Detroit Lions and their chances to be a legitimate contender in the NFC.
So far this year, the Lions are living up to that hype, with wins in four of their first five games, including a victory in Week 1 over the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
During Detroit’s last two wins, running back David Montgomery has made a tremendous impact with over 100 yards on the ground in both contests and a total of four rushing touchdowns.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently revealed that Montgomery has been doing exactly what they thought he would when they signed him in free agency earlier this year, via The Coachspeak Index on Twitter.
“To me, [Montgomery is] that type of guy [who] is always going to be your [bellcow running back]. He carries the load. And the other [running back] is the change-up. He’s going to get plenty of touches. That doesn’t mean those are carries, though. That could be in the pass game, that could be gadgets.”

Based on Campbell’s comments, one should expect Montgomery to get the majority of the workload in the offensive backfield for the rest of the season unless things take a drastic turn in the wrong direction.
This is a little surprising, considering the Lions just spent a first-round pick on running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2023 NFL Draft a few months ago.
After that selection, most assumed Gibbs and Montgomery would, at the very least, reach a point in the season in which both were getting a similar amount of touches each week.
But that doesn’t seem to be the plan for Campbell and Detroit, at least for the time being.
Gibbs has appeared in four games for the Lions this season, and he’s accumulated a total of 249 total yards on 53 touches (about 13 touches per contest).
