The Minnesota Vikings got their new guy, and he’s going to have to prove himself right away.
There were mixed reviews about J.J. McCarthy leading up to the NFL Draft, and while there was a lot to like about his tape, there were also some concerns.
With that in mind, former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky compared him to Jacksonville Jaguars star Trevor Lawrence, but not in a good way.
McCarthy reminds me of Trevor Lawrence in this way
So committed to “the on paper” way of doing the play with his feet
Fine line for him and @Vikings #nfllive pic.twitter.com/ZCHW48ASgd

Following the draft, Orlovsky explained that, at times, it seems like McCarthy looks way too committed with the way he is mechanically, as opposed to getting into more of a rhythm.
Of course, he also claims that that’s the kind of thing that can be taught and an issue that can definitely be fixed.
McCarthy comes with mixed opinions.
He didn’t have impressive stats in college, but most analysts claim that’s only because of the fact that he was deployed in one of the most run-heavy offenses in college football.
Others believe he’s capable of making every single throw he needs to, not to mention the fact that he made play after play on third down and spent three years in an NFL-like system and locker room under coach Jim Harbaugh.
McCarthy might be the most NFL-ready quarterback of those taken in the first round, and he’s in a position to succeed right away with coach Kevin O’Connell and his supporting cast.
Whether he’ll be able to prove the doubters wrong or not, remains to be seen.
