Ahead of the 2023 NFL season, the Carolina Panthers decided to make the bold move to make a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 overall pick, with the team intent on bringing in a quarterback that could become the new face of the franchise.
Even though there was a lot of debate over who was the best quarterback available at No. 1 in last year’s draft, the Panthers brass decided to bring in Bryce Young from the University of Alabama.
Unfortunately for Young, the rookie’s first year in the NFL was rough, to say the least, as Carolina was unable to win more than two games in the 2023 campaign.
This wasn’t a good look for Young or the Panthers, with C.J. Stroud, who was drafted at No. 2, leading the Houston Texans to 10 wins, an NFC South division title, and a playoff win over the Cleveland Browns.
With the Panthers needing to see some progress from Young, new head coach Dave Canales opened up about his approach with the 22-year-old quarterback, via Around The NFL.
“We’re not talking about a guy that there’s a big fix for, really,” Canales said. “You’re looking at an accurate player, a really smart player … and we’ve got to build the whole thing around him.”

With Young not making much of an impression during his rookie season, he can only go up from here, which should take the pressure off a bit moving forward.
It’ll be interesting to see if Young can take his game to the next level during the 2024 campaign and what the future might hold in Carolina.
