The Houston Texans were given an outside chance to win the AFC South when the 2023 season began.
Analysts across the league were certain the Jacksonville Jaguars would own the division, given their performance last season.
After beating the Jaguars, and starting the season with a 2-2 record, the Texans have outperformed expectations.
While DeMeco Ryans is proud of the way his team has played thus far, he also tempered his excitement.
In a recent press conference, Ryans said, “With the standings, we really don’t care.”

He talked about how his team “Continues to focus on their preparation,” and believes the standings will work themselves out.
Ryans was brought in during the offseason to help make a difference for this team.
The Texans haven’t made the playoffs since 2019, struggling over the last three years.
With any luck, Ryans will continue to turn the franchise around, which is now led by rookie C.J. Stroud.
Having a rookie QB and a new head coach can often be accompanied by growing pains.
Teams in this situation don’t typically find instant success, as it can often take a few years to get everything in order.
Through four games, that has not been the case for the Texans.
While Ryans isn’t necessarily looking at the standings, the Texans have put the NFL on notice.
They now head into Atlanta for their Week 5 matchup, hoping to be 3-2 after this week.
As Ryans said, one week at a time is their current mantra, trying to only focus on their upcoming opponent.
