The 2023 season was supposed to be different for the Los Angeles Chargers.
They had just signed Justin Herbert to a massive contract extension, an indication that he will be their quarterback for the foreseeable future.
With Herbert continuing to be under center and looking at the receiving talent he had around him, it seemed like this team would compete with the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West title.
Despite the preseason optimism, injuries were a massive issue for this team, and they were unable to gain traction during the year.
A lackluster record led to the team firing Brandon Staley from his post as head coach, opening the door for someone new.
After conducting several interviews, the team ended up choosing Jim Harbaugh as their newest leader.
This announcement has been public for a few weeks, but fans have been dying to know more about his contract, and what the team is paying him.
While the details aren’t official, Pro Football Talk indicates that his salary is around $16 million per season.
“It’s believed the former Michigan coach will receive an average salary of $16 million per year from his new team,” Mike Florio said.
Per multiple league sources, it’s believed the Chargers are paying coach Jim Harbaugh $16 million per year. (Since the numbers aren’t publicly disclosed, no one ever knows for sure what they are.) https://t.co/TKhVAX2fyF

This is slightly less than what Bill Belichick was being paid at the New England Patriots, but it is a massive contract, nonetheless.
The Chargers have a strong belief that Harbaugh will be the coach to get them out of a rut and that he will help develop Herbert into an even bigger star.
Harbaugh has a history of winning, both at the NFL and collegiate levels.
If he can help the Chargers institute a winning culture and mentality, the reported $16 million per year will be well worth it.
