The Arizona Diamondbacks may have lost on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, but they have won eight of their last 11 and are close to securing a major accomplishment.
Making the postseason in the National League has become extremely tough.
There are several quality teams in the NL, even in the D-Backs’ own division.
However, they are this close to finally advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
That was Torey Lovullo’s first season as the team’s skipper.
That year, the D-Backs won 93 games and finished second in the West.
They defeated the Colorado Rockies in the Wild Card Game but then lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-0, in the Division Series.
From that point on, five seasons with no playoffs ensued.
Some of them were ugly, such as their 52-110 performance in 2021.
But those days are now in the past.
Helped by the Atlanta Braves, the D-Backs’ magic number to make the playoffs became one according to Bob Nightengale.
Atlanta sweeps the #Cubs.

What does that mean?
It means that their next win, or the next Cubs loss, will officially seal their playoff ticket.
Arizona will have a tough task at hand, though, meeting the equally playoff-hungry Houston Astros for a weekend series.
The games will be played in Arizona, though, in front of their home crowd.
Led by the sensational rookie Corbin Carroll and star pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the D-Backs will be an interesting team to follow in the postseason if they finally seal their ticket.
They are one of the clubs to watch in October.
