The Jacksonville Jaguars made a small, yet significant move this offseason by trading a late-round draft pick for former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.
The former first-round pick and two-time national champion at Alabama didn’t work out in New England and is now slated to be Trevor Lawrence’s backup.
Head coach Doug Peterson recently spoke with the Jacksonville media about Jones’ first impressions with the team.
“He’s the ultimate pro. He’s done a great job since he’s been here…I liked him coming out of college…We’re excited to have him,” Pederson stated, per the team.
After a tough ending in New England, Jones will be in an easier situation in Jacksonville.
He’s not the starter and won’t have all the pressure on him.
However, he does bring some experience to the table.
The Patriots went 10-7 and made the playoffs with him starting as a rookie in 2021, and he also made the Pro Bowl that year.
He has started in all 42 career games that he has played in (18-24 record as starter).
With Lawrence’s injuries possibly playing a role in Jacksonville missing the playoffs last year, even though he only missed one game, having a veteran backup is not a bad idea at all if you are the Jaguars.
Heading into this year, Jones will be competing with fellow backup C.J. Beathard for the role of the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.
Beathard is entering into his eighth NFL season and his fourth with the Jaguars.
It will be interesting to see how this position battle progresses as training camp inches closer in Duval County.
