For those that thought first-round signal-caller Drake Maye was going to burst onto the scene immediately, they might want to re-think that.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo recently spoke with the New England media about his first impressions of his rookie quarterback.
“He has a lot to work on. He has a lot to work on, but I have no doubt that he’ll put the time in.

Mayo’s comments have started to make people wonder if the Patriots made the right pick at all.
They chose him at No. 3 overall in the NFL Draft after the Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams at No. 1 overall with the Washington Commanders selecting Jayden Daniels right after.
The Patriots could’ve gone with Maye, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr.
They decided to roll with Maye, which is why they knew what they were getting into when they selected him.
But, for any fans that are overreacting to this pick, they shouldn’t forget that this is the former ACC Player of the Year and two-time All-ACC performer.
He recorded close to 80 total touchdowns combined over 2022 and 2023 while playing for Mack Brown.
So, he was a great player in college.
If fans are worried about his development, then the Pats could start the bridge quarterback in veteran Jacoby Brissett.
The likes of Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and so many other great quarterbacks started their careers on the bench.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing if Maye did too.
So, it’s way too soon to put any sort of doubt on the career of Maye.
