Despite an impressive late run in September and winning their last five games in the regular season, the San Diego Padres missed the playoffs.
They finished with an 82-80 record but were actually under .500 for the vast majority of the year.
It’s a shocking outcome for a team that made the National League Championship Series last year and made several key additions and extensions in the offseason.
In these cases, the likelihood of the manager being labeled as the main culprit and losing his job is rather high.
However, owner Peter Seidler and main baseball operations guy A.J. Preller have been trying to preach stability in recent days/weeks.
As a result, the organization is sticking with Bob Melvin as the manager.
“AJ Preller confirms that Bob Melvin will return as Padres manager in 2024, per @AJCassavell,” B/R Walk-Off tweeted.
Melvin has plenty of experience, mostly with the Oakland Athletics but also with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.
He has a career 1517-1425 record with a .516 winning percentage.
He hasn’t won a World Series as manager yet, but has several postseasons under his belt, giving him the experience to lead a star-studded roster.
Fans, however, are mostly against the decision.

What bothers some fans is the fact that the Padres missed the playoffs and they haven’t dismissed anyone.
So no one gets held accountable

Seidler recently released a statement in which he said he will keep relying on the current team of people to make decisions and won’t overreact.
The Padres might be a piece or two from truly contending and probably don’t need any major moves.
They do need to keep the current core in place, though.
