New York Yankees fans finally got some news about the state of Gerrit Cole’s elbow.
Depending on how you view things, the news can be either good or bad.
That’s how ambiguous the message was.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that Cole will miss 1-2 months with his elbow injury.
What injury?
That’s where things go blurry.
In his report, Heyman implies that the ligament isn’t intact.
He writes:
“Several Yankees doctors and (Dr. Neal) ElAttrache have viewed Cole’s preliminary film, and while none has detected a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, there’s enough concern about the ligament that ElAttrache has suggested an in-person visit.”
Well, there you have it.
Cole already has his appointment with Dr. ElAttrache, and that’s probably when we will all know more about the extent of his injury.
The pitcher has shown his usual velocity this spring, but recovery between starts has been a problem.
Heyman also stated that Cole, at the very least, will have to wait for the swelling to subside and then if Dr. ElAttrache doesn’t detect an issue with the ligament, he will start to ramp up again, pushing his timeline to May or early June.
Fans had all types of reaction to the news on Twitter.
Some say the Yankees dodged a bullet:
THANK GOD

While others speculate that they might be hiding the true diagnosis because they want to keep their leverage in trade negotiations.
it’s gonna be longer than two months. The wording the NYY is all about trade leverage.

There were, of course, lots of Yankees fans with tweets of sadness and despair.

“At least.” Just great. At least Cashman has built a solid rotation. Oh wait.

It’s hard to see the positives in today’s development regarding Cole.
However, it could interpreted as such if his visit to Dr. ElAttrache results in him being cleared to resume his throwing program once inflammation subsides.
Right now, however, there is still a lot of uncertainty.
