Before the start of last season, star running back Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants were unable to see eye-to-eye on a new deal, as the deadline for franchise-tagged players to come to terms on a new contract had come and gone.
All signs pointed to things getting ugly between Barkley and the Giants, as he was not happy about not being able to come to terms on a contract and was seriously considering sitting out the 2023 NFL season as a result.
However, the two sides eventually came to an agreement, and Barkley played the season, making a little over $10 million, but would become a free agent once again in 2024.
This time around, it seems as though the Giants are willing to risk Barkley leaving the team as he will not be franchise-tagged.
However, the Giants are willing to talk about a new deal with Barkley, even though he had some injury issues once again during the 2023 campaign, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Giants will speak with free-agent-to-be running back Saquon Barkley and explore a deal with him, but they are also unlikely to tag him for $12,109,200, per sources. https://t.co/ektTdtZSaH pic.twitter.com/PspdR7W0V3

It seems as though Giants fans are preparing for Barkley to leave, with all signs seemingly pointing in that direction because it seems doubtful that the two sides will see eye-to-eye on a new deal.
With Barkley hitting the open market, he’ll likely have no shortage of suitors, as he remains one of the best players in the NFL at his position.
During the 2023 season, Barkley rushed for 962 yards and six touchdowns on 247 carries.
Barkley also caught 41 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns.
