The Philadelphia Eagles made a rather unorthodox decision ahead of Monday night’s clash vs. the Seattle Seahawks.
Eagles HC Nick Sirianni demoted defensive coordinator Sean Desai, sending him to the booth and promoting assistant Matt Patricia to defensive play-caller.
Patricia obviously comes with plenty of experience in that regard from his days with the New England Patriots and under Bill Belichick’s tutelage, but the fact that he demoted Desai sounded some alarms in the City of Brotherly Love; it seemed like a desperate move after two blowout losses.
When asked about that, star defender Fletcher Cox stated that as much as things got shaken up, the players will just have to adapt and adjust and get used to what’s next (via Zach Berman).
Fletcher Cox on DC change: “This is the NFL, so things happen. Obviously something got shaken up. At the same time, you’ve to understand it was not a player decision. As I always say, I’m Employee 91.
“It was a good week of practice. Desai has been really, really good for us.…

He also stated that the players will always have Desai’s back and support him despite this role change.
Sirianni, on the other hand, stated that the defense wasn’t playing or being coached well enough, taking a clear and huge shot at his staffer.
However, he did admit that Desai will continue to be involved in defensive play-calling, although Patricia will have the final decision.
The Eagles defense did hold up well for most of their game vs. the Seahawks.
Nonetheless, they crumbled under pressure at the most crucial moment, allowing Drew Lock to march down the field for 92 yards and the game-winning touchdown.
The Eagles are now riding a three-game losing streak and no longer control their own destiny in their division, and this decision could create a big ripple effect if things don’t change soon.
