Unlike the 2022 campaign, the last few weeks have been filled with struggles for the San Francisco 49ers and their second-year quarterback, Brock Purdy.
Purdy and the 49ers got off to an impressive 5-0 start this season, but since then, they’ve lost three straight games, and their perceived invincibility has worn off.
Some have pointed to Purdy as a reason why San Francisco has struggled during the last few weeks, but former NFL quarterback Alex Smith isn’t buying that theory, as he recently shared on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“The talk of Brock Purdy being the problem [in San Francisco] is absolutely nonsense… He’s still second in the NFL in QBR, and more importantly, when you turn on the tape, this guy routinely makes ridiculous plays in the passing game look routine.”

Smith knows plenty about facing criticism as a quarterback in the NFL, especially as a quarterback in San Francisco since that is where he spent the first eight years of his pro football career.
He’s right about Purdy though, for as tough as the criticism has been on him during the last few weeks, he’s still been performing better than more than half of the other quarterbacks in the NFL.
Are more opposing teams figuring out some of the young signal-caller’s tendencies this season?
Probably, but Purdy is still giving his San Francisco teammates plenty of opportunities to make plays out on the field.
The 49ers and their top quarterback had their bye in Week 9, so they’ve had some extra time to rest before a road matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Against the Jaguars, San Francisco will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak and remain in the race for a top spot in the NFC playoff bracket.
