Few careers in the NFL get off to fast starts like Patrick Mahomes’ did with the Kansas City Chiefs; once he took over as the starter from veteran Alex Smith, he never looked back, and now the franchise has three more Vince Lombardi trophies added to it’s trophy case.
Interestingly enough, when Smith was the starter for legendary head coach Andy Reid he was among the best quarterbacks in the league and had the Chiefs playing some competitive football on a weekly basis.
However, the team had a superstar waiting for his opportunity on the bench, and it seems as though some players in Kansas City knew what Mahomes was before he got the nod to be the starter for the Chiefs.
Apparently, former Chiefs player Tamba Hali is among the Chiefs players at the time who believed that Mahomes should’ve been the starter over Smith via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
“At times, we wanted him to play,” Hali said. “We wanted him to be on the field.”
Tamba Hali recently admitted that, at times when Patrick Mahomes was on the bench behind Alex Smith in 2017, Chiefs players wanted Mahomes to play. https://t.co/U9kNvalVfY

Obviously, Reid and his coaching staff eventually made the right decision to hand the keys over the Mahomes and let him do this thing on the football field, which has resulted in three Super Bowl titles won and the team approaching NFL history next season.
If Mahomes and company can win a third consecutive title next season, the Chiefs will become the first team in league history to pull off the three-peat, which obviously helps Mahomes’ case in the GOAT debate while also putting Reid in a different category.
