The Los Angeles Chargers lost several key pieces in the offseason.
Watching Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams leave was a big blow to their offense.
They were tight against the salary cap, and they might still have to part ways with several other veterans.
Nonetheless, new head coach Jim Harbaugh will have a chance to land a star in the upcoming edition of the NFL Draft, as the Chargers will be on the clock with the No. 5 pick.
That’s why former Super Bowl champion Mitchell Schwartz believes the former Michigan coach is playing chess, not checkers, right now.
Harbaugh went out of his way to praise JJ McCarthy, going as far as to calling him the best quarterback prospect in this class.
Schwartz believes this could be Harbaugh trying to get a team to trade up to No. 4 to get him so they can get Marvin Harrison Jr. with that fifth selection.
How much of this is looking out for his guy versus trying to make sure someone trades to 4 to take JJ so Marvin Harrison Jr. is there at 5 for the Chargers? https://t.co/ir06C1iHlK

This makes sense, but it’s highly unlikely to happen.
McCarthy’s draft stock is on the rise, but it would take a massive haul for the Arizona Cardinals to even pick up the phone and consider trading down from No. 4, as they’re reportedly quite high on Harrison.
Harrison Jr. and Justin Herbert would instantly be one of the deadliest duos in the league, and he has the makings of a generational wide receiver.
Still, barring a major turn of events, it doesn’t seem like he’s going to be available when the Chargers are on the clock.
