When the Denver Broncos signed legendary quarterback Peyton Manning after the Indianapolis Colts released him, many thought it was a risky move, as the future Hall of Famer had been written off after a neck surgery that some believed would end his NFL career.
Fortunately for Denver, the risky move paid off, with Manning leading the Broncos to two Super Bowl appearances and winning one title in the last year of his stint in the Mile High City.
The Broncos became a team that had proven that superstar quarterbacks at the tail end of their careers could have success, with John Elway winning two titles before hanging it up and Manning winning one in Denver.
Two years ago, Russell Wilson looked like he was the next veteran in line to resurrect his career as a title contender in Denver, with the team going all out to make a trade with the Seattle Seahawks.
Even though the Broncos gave up a lot for Wilson, it seemed like a calculated risk, but instead, it turned out to be a disaster that came to an end on Monday with Denver announcing they’ll release him.
Although many believe Wilson was past his prime and not the same player in Denver, former NFL player LeSean McCoy blames the Broncos for failing to make it work, via “Speak” on FS1.
“Everybody needs some help,” McCoy said, referencing how Wilson was brought in and asked to do too much without the proper talent around him.

McCoy makes a good point that Wilson was never a quarterback who could get it done by himself, but the Broncos gambled on him as if he was that kind of superstar under center.
That said, it might be safe to say that the Broncos set themselves up for failure with this blockbuster trade.
It’ll be interesting to see where Wilson lands next and if the results are the same.
