Cam Newton was a great quarterback for the Carolina Panthers several years ago, and he helped make the organization a very competitive one.
He was a somewhat mercurial and even polarizing figure, but there was no doubt that he made the Panthers respectable like they had never been before.
While on the “4thand1show,” former linebacker Thomas Davis, who was a teammate of Newton, said “nobody has done more for a single city and for a single organization than Cam Newton has for the Carolina Panthers.”

The Panthers began play as an expansion franchise in 1995, and although they reached the Super Bowl in 2003 and the NFC Championship Game two years later, they weren’t consistent winners.
When Newton, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, arrived, he was named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, and starting two seasons later, the Panthers made the playoffs three times in four years.
They went to the Super Bowl again in the 2015 season, which was the year Newton won the regular season MVP by throwing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns.
One of his great talents was his ability to gain yards with his legs, and in 2015, he ran for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Starting in 2019, injuries started to slow him down, and he signed with the New England Patriots in 2020, where he played poorly.
He got to wrap up his career with Carolina in 2021 before he retired for good.
For a newer franchise such as Carolina, there’s nothing like an initial sustained run of success, especially since it raises everyone’s standards and can lead to future success.
These days, the hope is that QB Bryce Young, who had a dismal rookie year in 2023, will develop into a star and take the organization back to the playoffs, a place it hasn’t been to since the 2017 season.
