The Pittsburgh Steelers had no starting-caliber quarterbacks last season.
Now, they have two.
Most people believe Russell Wilson has an edge in the QB competition, and even HC Mike Tomlin made it seem like the job is his to lose.
Nonetheless, former NFL QB David Carr isn’t so sure.
Talking on NFL Total Access, the player-turned-analyst predicted that Fields would be behind center come Week 1.
“This Arthur Smith offense is what he was supposed to run in Atlanta…Justin Fields is going to be the starter by Week 1,” Carr said.

He stated that this offense is tailor-made for him and his dual-threat skill set, adding that this was the offense Arthur Smith was supposed to run when he was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
Carr also praised Omar Khan and the Steelers front office for being able to pull off these moves and get both players at a discount, especially considering how much of a need they had to bolster their quarterback room.
Truth be told, it would make sense for the Steelers to start Fields over Wilson.
For starters, they will only have one year to make a decision about his future, as he’ll be eligible to sign a contract extension next offseason.
On the other hand, he’s also younger and with a higher upside at this point in his career.
Of course, they already know what they’re going to get from Wilson, and it’s not like he can’t still play.
But if they’re taking a big-picture approach and want to consider their future, as well as the fit with their new offensive coordinator, Fields could be considered a better fit for them.
