The New England Patriots are heading into a new era after more than two decades with legendary head coach Bill Belichick calling the shots and keeping his culture intact within the organization.
With the Patriots parting ways with Belichick after 24 seasons with the team, New England is headed into unfamiliar territory, and the storied franchise has already made some moves to set up what could be a bright future, even though the rebuilding process might be rough for a few years.
Along with bringing in former player Jerod Mayo to be Belichick’s successor, the team also brought back another familiar face in veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, presumably to be the starter come Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.
However, the Patriots also drafted what the team hopes will be their new franchise player, rookie quarterback Drake Maye, out of the University of North Carolina, setting up what will likely be a quarterback battle in training camp.
Even though Maye probably has a decent shot to start Week 1, former Patriots running back James White believes Brissett should get the nod unless the rookie is incredible in camp, via SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“I believe Jacoby Brissett should start every single football game unless Drake Maye goes out here in OTAs, training camp and he’s just blowing everybody away,” White said.

With the appeal of starting a rookie quarterback to get the fans excited about Patriots football once again, it’ll be interesting to see if Mayo and team owner Robert Kraft feel forced to start the Tar Heels product right out of the gate.
The smart move does seem like going with White’s approach, but training camp will be telling in terms of which way this team goes moving forward at the quarterback position.
