The San Francisco Giants fired manager Gabe Kapler after the team failed to secure its main objective: qualifying for the postseason.
After a few weeks of searching, they identified their top candidate and negotiated with him and another team to lure him to the Bay.
On Wednesday, the Giants made things official and announced Bob Melvin as their new skipper.
“OFFICIAL: Bob Melvin has been named Manager of the #SFGiants,” the team announced via Twitter.

Melvin managed the San Diego Padres in each of the last two seasons.
In 2022, he took the team to the National League Championship Series, but this year, the Padres failed to make the playoffs despite having one of the most impressive rosters in the league.
Their 82-80 mark was not enough to make it into October, which was probably the reason why they allowed Melvin to negotiate with the Giants in the first place.
Melvin is a successful and respected manager in MLB circles, a member of the exclusive 1,500-win club.
His 1,517-1,425 record and .516 winning percentage tell the story of an experienced manager who is still looking for his first truly elite roster.
He has had the chance of managing in two League Championship Series: in 2007 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and last year with the Padres.
With a few impact players acquired via free agency or trade, the Giants have the potential to make a leap and qualify to the 2024 playoffs under Melvin.
On the other hand, the Padres are now forced to bring in a new manager.
