The PGA Tour’s slow play debate just got a whole lot more interesting. After Lucas Glover’s strong stance against AimPoint, a green-reading technique used by many top pros, Collin Morikawa fired back with a sharp-witted counterpunch—suggesting that if AimPoint should be banned, then so should long putters.
Glover, a 45-year-old PGA Tour veteran, has been vocal about how AimPoint slows down play, arguing that it’s both ineffective and inconsiderate. But Morikawa, a two-time major winner, wasn’t about to let that slide.
“I have nothing against Lucas, but if we’re banning AimPoint I think we should ban long putters as well,” Morikawa said with a smirk.
Glover Slams AimPoint: “It Needs to Be Banned”
The controversy started when Glover went on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, unleashing a blistering critique of AimPoint.
“AimPoint, statistically, hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on the PGA Tour,” Glover claimed.
“It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole stomping around where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever.”
The slow-play issue has been boiling over in recent weeks, with five-hour rounds becoming common, especially at the Farmers Insurance Open and The American Express. Glover believes AimPoint is a major culprit, claiming that players overanalyzing greens are dragging out play to unacceptable levels.
Morikawa’s Counterpunch: “It’s Helped Me 1,000 Percent”
Morikawa wasn’t about to take Glover’s remarks lightly—especially considering he’s an AimPoint user himself.
“Look, AimPoint does take longer if you’re not doing it properly, if you’re not doing it when other players are reading their putts,” Morikawa admitted.
“I think there’s a respect issue. Some players might get too close to the hole, and I get that. But from my perspective, AimPoint has 1,000 percent helped me.”
The 29-year-old star then threw in a not-so-subtle jab at Glover, calling out his use of a 45-inch broomstick putter—a method that has drawn its own fair share of controversy.
“Are you going to tell other players not to walk around the hole when we’re picking up putts? I guess no one has said it, right?”
In other words—if we’re talking about banning things, why not take a look at the long putters that many believe offer an unfair advantage?
The PGA Tour’s Growing Divide Over Slow Play
The Morikawa-Glover exchange is just the latest chapter in golf’s ongoing debate over slow play.
- Some players, like Glover, believe the Tour needs to take drastic measures—whether that means banning AimPoint or implementing stricter penalties for slow players.
- Others, like Morikawa, argue that if you’re going to ban one thing, you need to apply the same scrutiny across the board—including the use of long putters.
Interestingly, several big-name players back Morikawa, including Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Max Homa, all of whom use AimPoint and believe in its effectiveness.
Awkward Pairing at the Genesis Invitational?
With both players set to tee it up at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, things could get interesting. Will Morikawa and Glover exchange words on the course, or will they keep the drama confined to the media?
One thing is certain: This won’t be the last time slow play—and how to fix it—is debated on the PGA Tour.
And with personalities like Morikawa and Glover not holding back, expect the fireworks to continue.
