Collin Morikawa isn’t one to shy away from a debate, and this time, he’s firing back at fellow American Lucas Glover over calls to ban the AimPoint putting system on the PGA Tour.
The controversy ignited when Glover, a veteran of the Tour and 2009 U.S. Open champion, suggested that AimPoint—a popular method used to read greens—should be outlawed, arguing that it slows down play and doesn’t actually improve putting stats.
“AimPoint, statistically, hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on the PGA Tour,” Glover said on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.
“It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole stomping around where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever.”
But Morikawa, a two-time major winner and an AimPoint user himself, wasn’t about to let that slide. The 27-year-old hit back with a not-so-subtle jab at Glover, pointing out the irony that Glover himself uses a 45-inch broomstick-style long putter—another controversial piece of equipment in the sport.
“I have nothing against Lucas, but if we’re banning AimPoint, I think we should ban long putters as well,” Morikawa quipped, laughing.
Morikawa Defends AimPoint, Calls Out “Respect Issue”
Morikawa doubled down on his defense of AimPoint, acknowledging that while the method can slow things down, the issue lies more with player etiquette than the system itself.
“Look, AimPoint does take longer if you’re not doing it properly, if you’re not doing it when other players are reading their putts,” Morikawa explained.
“I think there’s a respect issue. I think some players might get a little bit too close to the hole, and I get that.
He also called out the hypocrisy of singling out AimPoint when other common practices on Tour, like players walking near the hole while retrieving putts, could also be considered disruptive.
“Are you going to tell other players not to walk around the hole when we’re picking up putts? From my perspective, AimPoint has 1,000 percent helped me.”
Tensions Set to Boil Over at the Genesis Invitational
With Morikawa and Glover both in the field at the Genesis Invitational, this brewing rivalry could make for some awkward locker room encounters—and even more fireworks if they happen to be paired together at Torrey Pines.
Morikawa’s stance is likely to find support from AimPoint users like Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Max Homa, while traditionalists like Glover may continue to push for a ban.
One thing’s for sure—this debate isn’t going away anytime soon. If Glover is serious about banning AimPoint, he may have just picked a fight with the wrong guy.
