Jake Knapp blasted through the Cognizant Classic’s first round, smashing the course record with a phenomenal round of 59, and in doing so, attracted the attention and admiration of golf star Billy Horschel. Despite delivering a commendable performance himself, carding a round of five under, Horschel found himself trailing behind Knapp, seven shots shy of the top spot.
The PGA National course saw an unexpected camaraderie when the PGA cameras captured a candid moment of Horschel lauding Knapp’s exceptional performance. Known for their close-knit community, the PGA Tour players often share their admiration for each other’s game, and Horschel was no exception.
In a heartening exchange, Horschel commended Knapp, saying, “That’s some good playing.” The disbelief was clear in his voice as he continued, “I mean I didn’t think 59 was ever going to happen at PGA National. I would have put a lot of money on it. Like a lot of money! But that was awesome, congrats man. Pretty good buddy. I was five under, I feel like I shot four over what you shot!”
However, the congeniality faded as Horschel voiced his dissatisfaction with the PGA National course during his press conference. The golf star, renowned for his professionalism both on and off the course, expressed disappointment, citing the lack of wind as a significant factor that made the course easier.
After carding a first-round 66, Horschel explained, “There was no wind so it helps tremendously. You’ve got to tip your hat to him [Knapp]. He shot a 12-under par 59 at PGA National, which no one ever thought.”
He further criticized the course’s condition, stating, “I think the overseed has — the rough is not long enough. It’s not penal enough when you miss the fairway. I really wish we would just play this as a straight Bermuda. From tee to green, everything be straight Bermuda.”
Horschel didn’t hold back, expressing his disappointment with the course’s condition, stating, “It is a little disappointing that, I’d say the condition of the course is very scorable. But at the same time, you’ve still got to go out there, you’ve still got to hit golf shots, you’ve still got to make putts.” He predicted that the tournament would see the lowest scoring average in its history if the scoring trend continued.
As the tournament progresses, Horschel will certainly be hoping to continue his solid performance in the second round. Simultaneously, he will be keeping a close eye on Knapp, hoping for a few slip-ups that could allow him and the rest of the field to narrow the gap.
