Golf legend Jack Nicklaus offers a fresh perspective on the PGA National golf course, following a series of criticisms during the Cognizant Classic. Known for his remarkable 18 major wins, the 85-year-old veteran provides an insightful critique on the myriad aspects of golf.
The Cognizant Classic has been nothing short of electrifying. However, the PGA National golf course, which played host to the event, hasn’t been spared from criticism. Golf enthusiasts lambasted the course following Jake Knapp’s 59, and Joel Dahmen, without mincing words, referred to the course as ‘dumb’ as low scores dominated the first round. Billy Horschel was another who expressed disappointment, despite extolling Knapp’s 59.
Contrary to the wave of criticism, Jack Nicklaus offers a nuanced perspective. The golf aficionado made his thoughts known from the commentary booth during the third round of the Cognizant Classic.
In response to the criticisms, Nicklaus suggested that the situation might not be as grim as it appears. He remarked, “Guys hit it further, the conditions are good, you got a benign day and guys can shoot a good score. That’s OK. I like that,”. He further added, “If a golf course won’t yield to good golf then I don’t think it’s a very good golf course. Now if you have a day like we did Thursday and 3-under is the low score then I think it’s the golf courses fault.”
The PGA National has a reputation for being tough. Yet, recent records show that today’s players are performing better than ever. In 2023, Chris Kirk won with an overall score of 14-under and Austin Eckroat surpassed it at 17-under the following year. With Jake Knapp already at 16-under and other players trailing close behind, it’s likely we’re headed for another record-breaking low.
Is it possible that in the modern era, the PGA National has lost its edge as a challenging course? Only time will tell.
