Jason Day, the 37-year-old golf sensation, never fails to make headlines, not only with his performance on the golf course but also with his audacious wardrobe selections. Post breaking off his eight-year association with Nike, Day has partnered with Malbon Golf, a streetwear label renowned for its fusion of contemporary and retro fashion. Despite the ongoing heated debates surrounding his unconventional style, Day remains unyielding in his choices.
Day’s unique fashion sense took an unexpected turn during the Genesis Invitational when he showed up in a sweater for Saturday’s match. His nonconformist choice of attire left onlookers and pundits stunned and sparked a social media uproar. Regardless of the widespread reactions, the golfing maestro has unflinchingly defended his fashion choices.
Recently, in an interview with ‘Beyond the Clubhouse’, Day spoke highly of his new collaboration with Malbon Golf. Recalling some of the amusing comments he received for his outfits, Day reminisced about an incident at Pebble Beach. As per his recount, his arrival at the range in sweatpants caused quite a stir. Notwithstanding the standard dress code, Day appeared on the course in sweatpants, which was a first and possibly the last time too. He found the experience enjoyable and worth a try. This unusual attire drew a humorous comment from CBS commentator and golf legend Trevor Immelman, who asked if Day had lost his luggage.
Despite the criticism, Day has consistently defended his affinity for the streetwear brand on the golf course. He even expressed his preference for layered golf clothing during the interview, asserting that “Golf is so much better layered”. Day’s penchant for layered clothing is no secret, as evidenced by a past incident at the Masters where he was asked to remove an overly-branded sleeveless vest. The golfer complied without argument, adhering to the officials’ rules.
Day, who considers himself a fashion aficionado, further elaborated on his style philosophy, stating, “When you have more layers, it’s like another piece.” He succinctly summed up his fashion perspective with the five-word phrase, “It’s like an art piece.”
Despite his stylistic choices being at odds with conventional golfing attire, the PGA Tour professional remains firm in his fashion convictions. He continues to push the envelope with his daring look, not just reflecting on his past but also hinting at his future style plans.
Last year, during the Masters, Day was asked to modify his unique fashion sense following a wardrobe choice scripted by the Malbon team. He was seen sporting a distinctive white vest with Malbon Golf branding, which he was asked to remove, and he complied respectfully. That hasn’t deterred him from continuing to experiment with his look at each course appearance, even reintroducing the visor, a choice not favored by many nowadays.
When asked about his style plans for this year, the golfer revealed, “We have to get clearance on the scripting this year.” If pre-approval is needed, it indicates a deviation from the usual event guidelines. Even Day himself is uncertain if his adventurous fashion plans will get the green light, but he did hint at it being “bold stuff” that he and his team are planning for this year’s Masters.
As always, it will be intriguing to see how Day manages his outfit choices and what fresh fashion elements he brings to the course. The question remains – are you a fan of Jason Day’s avant-garde fashion sense? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
