As the former CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman may no longer sit at the helm, but his legacy continues to shape the league’s trajectory. Despite his absence, Norman’s vision of bringing LIV Golf to his homeland, Australia, has been spectacularly realized. The LIV Golf Adelaide event, the pinnacle of the league’s calendar, boasted a record-breaking 100,000 fan turnout, creating an electrifying atmosphere that exceeded Norman’s preconceived plans.
Norman’s original aspiration was to secure a partnership between the North Adelaide golf course and the league, thereby providing a more challenging venue. However, his plans were met with critique. In February 2025, Keiran Snape publicly voiced the need for extensive consultation with the residents of North Adelaide and other key stakeholders, including the North Adelaide Golf Club members, the Adelaide Park Lands Association, and the Adelaide Park Lands Authority.
Despite Norman’s departure, his efforts have not fallen by the wayside. The new CEO, Scott O’Neil, has been instrumental in forging new partnerships and spearheading initiatives. During a recent episode of the Girl Dad podcast, O’Neil shared insights into his initial experiences with LIV and his plans for the league’s future.
In a humorous aside, O’Neil voiced his intention to focus more on his golf game. He then shifted the discussion towards the league’s recent successes, revealing, “We just extended there to 2031.” Beyond the extension deal, O’Neil expressed awe at the 100,000 fans who attended the event, stating that the turnout ought to form the baseline for future expectations.
Addressing the challenges ahead, O’Neil said, “What I’m racking my brain about with the team is, what do we have to do? What are we willing to do? What do we have to do and what can we do, and how quickly can we do it?” He further revealed that 30% of the attendees had never attended a golf event before, a statistic that underscores the league’s potential for growth.
Norman’s legacy isn’t confined to the league’s leadership. His influence played a pivotal role in the league’s deal extension. While Norman may have vacated the CEO’s seat, his vision continues to guide the sport.
Norman’s foresight was instrumental in shaping the new deal. After more than three years of planning, the deal was finalized during the last day of the LIV Golf Adelaide event. It was announced by South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil, and LIV Golf Board Member Greg Norman that Adelaide will serve as the exclusive home of LIV Golf Australia.
Moreover, Norman has been entrusted with the redevelopment of the North Adelaide Golf Course. This decision was made in collaboration with the Malinauskas Labor Government and Adelaide City Council. The famed golfer and seasoned architect is set to transform the prime-location course into a unique golfing destination.
Till date, Greg Norman Golf Course Design organization has completed over 100 course designs in 34 countries, earning a reputation as one of the world’s premier signature golf course design firms. Norman remains steadfast in his commitment towards the sport, stating, “I’m honoured to design a world-class course that will benefit current and future generations here in Australia. Long LIV Golf!”
While Norman’s dream for LIV Golf continues to unfold, the question remains: will the league replicate Adelaide’s success in other countries? We invite you to share your thoughts on this matter.
