Ludvig Aberg entered 2024 with sky-high expectations, but his journey hit a major roadblock when an unexpected severe illness left him vomiting, feverish, and rapidly losing weight. The Swedish sensation, who has been tipped as one of the next big stars on the PGA Tour, shocked fans when he abruptly withdrew from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after just one round.
Now, after battling through one of the roughest stretches of his young career, Aberg is back—and he’s hungry to prove himself.
A sudden and severe illness derails Aberg’s early season
Aberg’s troubles first became apparent at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he struggled to deliver a performance that matched his usual high standards. But it was his withdrawal from Pebble Beach that truly raised concerns.
The 24-year-old later revealed that he had been battling a serious illness, describing it as one of the worst experiences of his career.
“It was rough for a while. I sort of woke up in the middle of the night. And I started throwing up and I started [seeing] all these things, and it wasn’t very enjoyable,” Aberg told Golf Magic.
His condition quickly worsened, leading to drastic weight loss.
“First, I was really hot, then I got really cold. Lost about eight pounds total in two days, so that’s not the right way to lose weight.”
The illness left Aberg completely drained, forcing him to step away from competition and focus on regaining his strength.
The road to recovery: Aberg’s comeback plan
After withdrawing from Pebble Beach, Aberg took a much-needed break, prioritizing rest, proper nutrition, and slow recovery.
His focus? Eating as much as possible, getting back to a full training routine, and returning stronger than before.
“It was nice to take a break, eat as much as possible, and return to training,” he said.
He emphasized fish and steak as key parts of his recovery diet and has been steadily regaining his strength. The good news? His training hasn’t suffered, and he’s feeling better every day.
Now back on the course, Aberg is tied for fifth after 36 holes, showing signs that he’s putting the worst behind him.
Can Aberg bounce back stronger?
With his health improving and his game showing flashes of brilliance again, the real question is: Can Ludvig Aberg use this setback as fuel for a monster comeback?
After being blindsided by illness and enduring a brutal stretch of physical distress, Aberg is more determined than ever to chase greatness on the PGA Tour. If he continues on this trajectory, he could turn this season into the defining year of his career.
For now, fans will be watching closely to see if he can pick up the pace, reclaim his momentum, and prove that nothing—not even an eight-pound weight loss in two days—can stop him.
