While many top-tier golfers have grappled with performance issues after transitioning to LIV, the exception to this trend is Joaquin Niemann. The Chilean golfer has been delivering stellar performances and has to his credit two PGA Tour victories. The highlight of his career came in 2025 at the LIV Golf, where he clinched his first individual title at one of the most prestigious events.
His triumphant under-13 score and a 3-stroke lead at the LIV Golf Adelaide further propelled him into the limelight. Now a holder of 16 career wins, Niemann has managed to impress some of the biggest names in the sport. What’s interesting to note is the robust support system behind his success, which until now has remained relatively under the radar. This article brings to light the key players in Niemann’s support system, including his wife, caddie, and family.
Niemann’s caddie, Gary Matthews, is a significant figure in the golfer’s on-course success. Their partnership, which commenced in 2020, has seen Matthews’ two decades of experience coming in handy in guiding Niemann on the course. Before joining forces with Niemann, Matthews had worked with notable golfers such as Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman, Sergio Garcia, Anthony Kim, Charl Schwartzel, Luke Donald, Lydia Ko, and Minjee Lee.
Matthews, a South African, holds a fond memory from the 2003 Presidents Cup held in his home country. He and his then-partner Tim Clark participated in five matches, winning two. But it was not just the victories that made the event memorable, but also the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela. Matthews’ contribution to golf is not restricted to caddying; he is an accomplished golfer himself and has played for the University of Arizona.
In 2021, just after Niemann joined LIV Golf, the duo of Niemann and Matthews recorded two impressive wins in Mexico and Saudi Arabia within a month. Niemann’s recent performance at Adelaide further accentuates their successful partnership.
However, Niemann’s support system extends beyond the golf course. His wife, Christina Hellema Puga, has been a constant pillar of support. The couple, who began dating in March 2017 and married in September 2023, have often been seen together at various golfing events. Puga, an architect by profession, has been an unwavering supporter of Niemann, both in life and on the golf course.
Niemann’s parents, Jorge Niemann and Pamela Zenteno, have also played a crucial role in his journey. Both his parents have a sports background – his father was a college basketball player, and his mother was a professional field hockey player for the Chilean national team. Niemann’s introduction to golf came at the tender age of three, courtesy of his father, a recreational golfer.
The support Niemann has received from his father, wife, and caddie has been instrumental in his rise to success. As his career continues to ascend, the question remains whether he can secure another win this year. What are your thoughts? Feel free to share in the comments below.
