The 2024 New York Mets have a wide range of outcomes.
Let’s just say that they are unlikely to be as good as they were in 2022, when they went 101-61; but also won’t be as bad as their 2023 version, which yielded a 75-87 record.
The starting rotation, particularly with Kodai Senga out with an injury, doesn’t inspire much confidence even though it does have potential.
The offense, on the other hand, is looking very, very solid especially considering they signed veteran star J.D. Martinez on Thursday night.

From one to five, the Mets’ lineup can rival any other unit in the league.
Those five are really that good: Brandon Nimmo is a premier leadoff hitter, Jeff McNeil is a former All-Star and batting champion, Francisco Lindor just posted a 30-30 season last year, and Pete Alonso is an annual threat to hit 40 home runs.
So is Martinez, although at this stage we should adjust his expectations to 30 long balls.
He delivered them last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, 33 to be more specific.
He also contributed a rock solid .893 OPS and accumulated 103 RBI in just 113 games.
If an unfortunate second-half injury hadn’t gotten in his way, he could have made a run at 40 homers.
From six to nine, the lineup has more questions marks, but also some very nice potential: Francisco Alvarez won’t hit .300, but he does have a lot of power, and Starling Marte is finally healthy after a couple of rough seasons with core/groin injuries.
Brett Baty is the third baseman of the future; and while Harrison Bader offers more defense than offense, he does have some power and speed.
The unit has a little bit of everything, and could be among the league leaders in runs scored.
